The pomegranate fruit has been used medicinally for thousands of years. In various religions, cultures and traditions it is often linked to fertility and women’s health. This is likely due to the abundance of ruby-red "arils" found inside the fruit. The arils are the individual juice sacks contained within a pomegranate. There are typically more than 600 arils found inside each pomegranate. Inside the aril is also a hard kernel, the pomegranate seed. Throughout history these seeds have been known to contain valuable and rich nutrients. By pressing the seeds, a very small amount of oil can be removed. This is how we produce our pomegranate seed oil. It takes over 200 pounds of fresh pomegranates to produce 1 pound of pomegranate seed oil.
Pomegranate seed oil is one of the only plant sources of conjugated fatty acids, which contribute significantly to human health. Pomegranate seed oil also contains an exceptional amount of punicic acid, an Omega-5 fatty acid closely related to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Scientific studies have indicated that the potent therapeutic and preventive properties of CLA may help the body fight against human cancers, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. No, our pomegranate seed oil blend does not need refrigeration. It is stable at room temperature and will stay fresh for several months if kept in a cool, dark place. However, you may refrigerate the oil if you prefer. Some people find it refreshing to use the oil when cold, especially to soothe minor skin irritation, such as sunburn.
We have not had any reports of allergic reactions to our pomegranate seed oil blend, but such a reaction is possible. We use the gentlest cold press method of extracting the oil from pomegranate seeds. We do not use any solvents or preservatives in our product. Sometimes the oil will crystalize or solidify due to the natural properties of the oil. This is entirely normal and does not mean the product has turned bad. Our blend is formulated to help prevent solidification, but it still can happen. You may put the bottle in warm water to “melt” it back to a liquid state, or you may contact us and we will gladly replace the bottle with a new one.
The typical aroma of freshly pressed pomegranate seed oil is a light, nutty smell. Some people like this scent, but others find it objectionable. We have been asked if the smell means the product has turned rancid. Like all natural oils, pomegranate seed oil can go rancid. But we carefully monitor the quality of our oils and produce them in small, controlled batches. If stored properly in a cool, dark location, an opened bottle should last several months. If you have further questions, please contact us.
Many customers add a drop of their favorite essential oils to our blend to enhance the aroma, such as lavender, eucalyptus, or rosemary oils. Be sure to only add a very small amount of essential oil. One drop per bottle should be enough. Also, it is not normally advised to ingest anything containing essential oils, so if you have added another oil to our blend you should not use it orally. Please consult with your natural health practitioner or retailer to find the perfect essential oils.
